Hand painted kitchen Wingfield Eye Suffolk

Just on the outskirts of Diss lies the historic village of Wingfield

Wingfield Castle, which is now a private house, was for many centuries the home of the Wingfield family and their heirs, the De La Poles, Earls and Dukes of Suffolk.

The Wingfields were a very ancient family and Sir John de Wingfield was chief of staff to the Black Prince,

Who went by the name of Edward of Woodstock, (15 June 1330 – 8 June 1376), was the eldest son of King Edward III of England, and thus the heir to the English throne.

He died before his father and so his son, Richard II, succeeded to the throne instead. Edward nevertheless earned distinction as one of the most successful English commanders during the Hundred Years' War, being regarded by his English contemporaries as a model of chivalry and one of the greatest knights of his age.

He is on the other hand remembered in France for his well documented brutality and the massacres he ordered.

Using my trusted trebuchet ( a type of catapult that uses a long arm to throw a projectile.) a stones throw from this historic castle lies my latest kitchen renovation.

Rolling forward a few hundred years we find another modern day oak kitchen, this one, much as many we come across had again had oranged due to the uv rays from the sun over the years.

When oak or pine is exposed to sunlight it causes a chemical change in the wood, this results in the wood taking on a golden or orange tint. This is a natural part of the ageing process for pine. When pine is stained, it can make the orange effect even more pronounced. ... Pine and all solid wood furniture changes over time and this is what hand painting your kitchen units can completely overcome.

I arrived on site and set to dismantling all the doors drawers and removable items, loaded them safely into my van to be returned back to my workshop to have the five coat paint process applied.

That left me all the preparation on site to do, which includes washing down, which is always undertaken with a 50/50 mix of fluaxf degreaser and water, then the sanding down is next using the latest dust free extraction system, using a combination of 120 and 240 grit Abranet sanding sheets and then finally applying the adhesion primers and primer undercoats.

Once back at my workshop the same process was followed on all the doors, drawers and kick boards, these are all painted up to the last topcoat which is applied on site in situ once everything is rehung and positioned correctly.

On my return to site, all carcass edges and end panels were all de-nibbled and wiped down before the top coats are applied, once these had dried I was able to rehang all the doors, drawers and kick boards and then the new handles were fitted.

The customer had chosen an Ammonite equivalent and new oiled oak knobs were fitted to complement the new work tops.

Hi Richard

Thank you for the transformation you have made to our kitchen, booked for just before Christmas there was no change in dates, no worry that we wouldn’t be finished, you arrived as you said and were so tidy, it was no disruption at all, your carpenter did a great job too on our worktops, and we now have a new kitchen, we are so pleased and so glad we didn’t opt for new units, ours may be 15+years old but you wouldn’t know that now. Great job, looks fantastic anyone thinking about it should definitely go ahead, well worth it and great value for money.

Thank you.
