Hand Painted Oak Kitchen Braintree Essex

Jump to PhotosThis particular kitchen finds us in Braintree Essex.

Braintree dates back over 4,000 years when it was just a small village. People in the area during the Bronze and Iron Ages, built houses on the lower part of the town, near the River Brain, known as the Brain Valley. This area was also inhabited by the Saxons, who occupied the town after the Romans had left. Notable road names in Braintree now coincide with names of people who fought for the town, and locals living here, such as Aetheric Road (a notable Saxon nobleman that died in the Battle of Maldon in 991, and subsequently left most of the land of Braintree to the Bishop of London, as well as the land of Bocking going to the Prior and monks of Canterbury), Trinovantian Way (at one point, the townsfolk were called Trinovantes, who were around during the Iron Age.

My particular clients weren't Romans or Saxons but went under the modern English names of Terry and Eilien and they contacted me several months ago to transform their solid medium/dark oak kitchen into something a lot brighter and modern.

When I first received their emailed requested, I replied asking for some general layout photos showing all the doors, drawers and end panels, from these photos I can provide every client an approximate quotation for their hand painted Kitchen project.

From here if the customer is happy to proceed, I then arrange a home visit to confirm all details.

When it comes to choosing a colour, I normally advise any colour can be matched so the worlds their oyster, once a choice has been made I suggest a sample pot ought to be purchased and then a sample board can be painted and then moved around the kitchen at different times to get an idea of what they could expect.

Terry and Eilieen chose Alcro's equivalent to slipper satin, this has been over the years a popular shade.

When I arrived on site I then dismantled all the doors draws and removable items loaded them safely into my van to be returned back to my workshop to have the five coat paint process applied.

That left me all the preparation on site to do, which includes washing down, which is always undertaken with a 50/50 mix of fluaxf degreaser and water, then the sanding down is next using the latest dust free extraction system, and then finally applying the adhesion primers and undercoats.

Once back at my workshop the same process was followed to all the doors, drawers and kickboards, these are all painted up to the last topcoat which is applied on site in situ once everything is rehung and positioned correctly.

On my return to site, all carcass edges, internal shelves and end panels were all de-nibbled and wiped down before the top coats are applied, once these had dried I was able to rehang all the doors, drawers and kick boards and then the new handles were fitted.

Terry and Eileen were over the moon with the final outcome as the photos show.
